Crewe cricketers lose two thrillers

CREWE CC were involved in two thrilling games at the weekend but unfortunately suffered defeat in both.

On Saturday they travelled to Cheadle and new opener Steve Hartley and Mark Hurst put on 27 before Hurst was out for 14.

Hartley went on to make a useful 21 but the loss of three cheap wickets reduced Crewe to 63-5.

New professional Nauman Alavi, who only arrived in the country on Friday, played a good innings of 30 as he and Kamal Torraman (20) put on 51 for the sixth wicket.

However, when they both went Crewe slipped to 121-9 before a spirited last wicket partnership of 34 between Richard Marsh (23 not out) and young Dan Butler (4) got Crewe to a useful 155 all out.

Nolan McKenzie (4-23) opened the bowling for Crewe and produced a superb spell as he took three wickets and together with a run out saw Cheadle struggle to 56-4.

Alavi (2-41) also bowled well as they reduced Cheadle to 131-8 before a gritty partnership of 25 saw Cheadle sneak home by 2 wickets.

Cheadle 20 pts Crewe 8 pts.

On Sunday Crewe were knocked out of the Talbot Cup by visiting neighbours Weston. On a flat wicket Weston rattled up a huge 302-5 off their 45 overs.

Opener Mike Alexander top scored with a fine 92 but had good support from the prolific Raj Kumar (77), Simon Banks (30) and Quaz Haleem (27). McKenzie was again Crewe’s best bowler with 2-54.

When they replied Crewe lost Asim Naseer first ball but Mark Hurst (37) and Nauman Alavie (25) gave them a glimmer of hope but at 70-4 it looked all over before McKenzie played a fine innings of 75 and with good support from Mark Spencer (32) and Anthony Warburton (21) Crewe went down fighting as they were all out for 220.

This Saturday Crewe are at home to Kidsgrove 1.30pm.
