THERE was always the feeling Steve Davis would get his chance to shine with the Alex.
As the champagne years of Championship football began to come to a close at Crewe, Nantwich Town were in the process of a remarkable transformation.
From the wrong end of North West Counties League Division One, the Dabbers emerged with a carefully constructed plan by Clive Jackson and co to take the club up through the pyramid system.
New ground, new leagues and crucially bigger gates; everything fell into place with Davis proving the right man for the job.
All this success at one end of the A534 came in stark contrast to affairs at Gresty Road.
After sustained progression and stability, Crewe went into freefall when they tumbled out of the Championship and Dario Gradi handed over the reins.
Some Alex fans cried out for Davis when Steve Holland was in the middle of his turbulent spell in charge.
A whole load of heartache later and the 43-year-old arrives back at the club where he left it – in the basement.
Whether he and Gudjohn Thordarson make the dream team Crewe desperately needs remains to be seen.
But after taking Nantwich so close to three successive promotions and bagging trophies, he has earned his chance to make an impact at the Alexandra Stadium.
“I’ve had a successful time at Nantwich but everything comes to an end,” he said.
“Hopefully that can carry on moving up but now I’ve got to focus on something different.
“I can’t wait to get cracking.
“I know what Gudjohn wants from me and the role he wants me to play.
“Gudjohn has come in and made a lot of changes in a short space of time but I’m sure some stability is now needed.
“He has given the club something fresh and hopefully I can add to that.
“We will look to play entertain football but not at the expense of results.”
Thordarson was always keen to bring his own man into the backroom team.
He’s delighted to have Davis by his side as Neil Baker moves on to a new role within the club.
“Steve is a simple, straightforward and very hard-working man,” said the Alex boss.
“He has worked hard to get success in the lower leagues and has done very well with Nantwich Town.
“I’m pleased to get him in and I look forward to working with him.”
