THE Winsford community came out in force during a unique event to gather memories and artefacts from the First World War.

The Cheshire Records Office was on hand at the library on Thursday, May 8, to catalogue family histories pertaining to the Great War.

Locals were able to offer up medals, artefacts and their own stories during the special event, organised by Winsford Historical Society and the Cheshire Military Museum.

The information and oral histories will now live on as part of the county’s archives, ensuring that details are not lost for future generations.

Many of the town’s youngsters got involved on the day.

Willow Wood pupils got their hands on local author John Malam’s new book about the conflict – The Story of the First World War for Children.

Elsewhere, students helped recapture the spirit of the times with renditions of popular songs of the trenches.
