THE first album from Salford two-piece The Ting Tings has a lot of hype to live up to.

It's fortunate then that, for the main part Jules de Martino and Katie White's electro pop offering, We Started Nothing, delivers.

Opening track, the angular Great DJ, sounds better with each play and is a top track for getting ready for a Saturday night out, while follow up single That's Not My Name - a spiky hybrid between Toni Basil's Hey Micky and The Knack's My Cherona - has feel good hit written all over it.

Other stand out tracks include Fruit Machine - a techo Nancy Sintra-esque tune - and the brilliant Shut Up and Let Me Go, a disco stomp with an opening riff that rips off Sugarhill Gangs Rapper's Delight and Blondie's Rapture.

Unfortunately tracks such as the whimsical Traffic Light (which could be a Sesame Street sing along) and Impacallia Carpisung are a bit of a let down.

It's a mixed album, with plenty of infectious tunes to hook you in.

The only problem with infectious is that it can become irritating.

Only time will tell if We Started Nothing will sound as good in years to come.
