The great-nephew of Cilla Black kept success in the family by passing his blind audition on The Voice.

Tobias Robertson, from Newport, South Wales, charmed sole chair-turner Boy George with his version of You’ve Got A Friend by Randy Newman.

Fellow panellists will.i.am, Paloma Faith and Ricky Wilson sang, swayed and clapped along to the performance.

“You’re a real singer,” the Culture Club star told him.

The appearance was filmed in September, just a month after Cilla died at her villa in Spain.

During an interview with the Press Association, the 22-year-old explained why he had avoided a song by his great-aunt.

“The audition was quite close to when she passed away so I didn’t really want to go down that route, especially as my mum was there to watch and I know she would have burst into tears if I started to sing a Cilla one.”

The Welshman only met his famous relative once – and that was at the funeral of his grandfather, Cilla’s brother George, in 2010.

Tobias would like to honour her by recording an album of his take on her hits, which include Anyone Who Had A Heart and You’re My World.

Earlier in the BBC One talent show, Vivica Jade’s performance of Gravity resulted in chair spins from three of the four coaches, with Paloma choosing not to hit the buzzer.

Vivica has already tasted life as a pop star courtesy of membership in two girl groups: Fenix, who toured with the Pussycat Dolls and Ed Sheeran, and Vida, who were managed by JLS star Oritse Williams.

The mother-of-one decided to join will.i.am’s team.

Teenager Chloe Castro, who regularly busks in Durham, conquered her nerves with a polished rendition of From Eden by Hozier.

“Sometimes, a one-turn is as important as a four-turn,” said Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky.

He was also the sole turner for contestant Kagan’s version of Take A Bow by Rihanna.

Ricky told the 19-year-old Londoner: “When you sing, your personality comes through.”

Norwich labourer Bradley Waterman impressed both Paloma and Ricky with his take on Cee Lo Green’s Forget You.

Some of the coaches could not figure out if the voice they were hearing belonged to a male or a female.

“The reason why I turned was because of the androgyny thing,” Paloma, who was successful in her pitch for the 19-year-old, said.

Mari Marli set out to win will.i.am’s approval by auditioning to one of his songs.

The 22-year-old from London only just achieved her aim with Bang Bang because the American hit the buzzer on the very last note.

Londoner Vangelis also chose a hit by one of the coaches – Culture Club’s Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?

“I’ve never really heard anyone do any of my songs that well,” Boy George admitted.

Although Paloma and Ricky also turned, the 24-year-old’s final destination was never in doubt.

Gemma Magnusson

Lifestyle coach Gemma Magnusson, a four-time winner of the Britain’s strongest woman title, failed to convince any of the coaches to spin their red chairs.

But she demonstrated her strength when she simultaneously lifted up will.i.am and Ricky.

At the end of week five, will.i.am and Boy George have nine acts in total, Paloma and Ricky have eight.

The Voice continues next week on BBC One.
