Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has admitted she was terrified at the prospect of giving birth, as she praised NHS midwives.

The mother-of-two said she felt humbled by the work of healthcare employees and volunteers as she joined guests celebrating the ITV news programme’s Health Star Awards on Monday.

“It makes you feel so humble, but also inadequate, because some of these people have their normal day jobs and then go the extra mile as well,” she told the Press Association.

“We have all had people who have helped us – I was absolutely terrified of giving birth, but my midwife at both of my births was extraordinary.”

Garraway’s daughter and son with husband Derek Draper were born in 2006 and 2009.

Speaking at the central London event, she also lauded her GMB colleague Sean Fletcher who ran the London Marathon on Sunday in aid of the Heads Together mental health charity.

Having previously completed the mammoth challenge herself, she said she would love to see her fellow presenter Piers Morgan take it on.

“I made it, so if I can do it, Piers can do it – but he would be more entertaining by talking the whole way around.”

Commenting on her own next big milestone, Garraway told how she is preparing for her 50th birthday next week, adding that writing her book The Joy Of Big Knickers: (Or Learning To Love The Rest Of Your Life) had “helped her prepare”.

But remembering the famous moment her dress popped open while on air last week, she joked: “Maybe when you turn 50 everything just starts spilling everywhere.

“It’s a funny number, it crystallises a lot of things for you.”

Garraway said she would mark the occasion with a big party at the end of the summer, when her husband also hits 50.

“We’ll be celebrating a century of awesome,” she said. “Perhaps that should be a fancy dress theme.”
