Piers Morgan has revealed that Americans can't tell the difference between him and Colin Firth - and the Oscar-winning actor is not so keen on the comparison.

The former tabloid editor turned TV presenter revealed he approached Colin at the recent GQ awards to ask him about the rumour The King's Speech star is tipped to play him in a film about the hacking scandal.

Piers revealed: "We were laughing because Colin still gets mistaken for me all the time, particularly in America.

"I do get mistaken for him quite a lot, it's probably because we're both about the same height and we talk in vaguely posh accents, and the Americans, in particular, have a large amount of difficulty in telling us apart.

"Now I obviously get much more out of that problem than he does, so he was like, 'I'm still being bloody mistaken for you, Morgan'."

The former Britain's Got Talent judge admitted Colin would "be the obvious choice" for the role.

But he joked: "I hear Brad Pitt wants to do it... I'd hate you to repeat it."

Meanwhile, Piers also revealed he has asked many of his famous friends, including Dame Helen Mirren, to appear on his ITV show Piers Morgan's Life Stories, but they refuse to be interviewed by him .

"Michael Caine sent me a hilarious email when I asked him to do Life Stories saying, 'Piers, for all the reasons I love watching your show, that's why I'm not going to do it', which I thought was great," he said.
