Disaster will strike in early 2015 as the Underworld staff enjoy a work outing. But the tragedy, involving a Street Cars minibus with Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) behind the wheel, will leave some of Weatherfield’s residents fighting for their lives, reported Radio Times.

The stunt, which will deliver “a high-octane start to 2015″, will be filmed before Christmas, and screened on the ITV soap in the new year, with details being kept under wraps.

A source on the set told the Daily Mirror: “The staff of Underworld will be caught up in the horrific crash as they head off on a works’ outing in a Street Cars minibus driven by Steve McDonald.

“Bosses are trying to keep all the details secret until filming begins in about three weeks, but more than one character will be hospitalised as a result of the crash and one Underworld girl will see their life on the line. They might have a happy Christmas on screen, but most of the families will be rocked by this disaster early in 2015.”

The Daily Star predicted Sally Webster (Sally Dyvenor) and Beth Tinker (Lisa George) could be amongst the casualties.

The show’s producer Stuart Blackburn previously hinted that cab firm boss and Rovers landlord Steve’s depression will spiral out of control.

“It will come to a head in January where a tragedy will strike that will force him to face up to those demons,” he said.

Coronation Street previously featured a coach crash in 1969, and a tram crash to mark the show’s 50th anniversary in 2010.
