Michael Jackson’s father Joe is in hospital in Brazil after suffering a stroke.

The Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paolo issued a statement saying that the patriarch of the musical family was admitted to its intensive care unit on Sunday afternoon.

It also said he was suffering from an irregular heartbeat but gave no further details and did not say what condition he was in.

Nogueira Fresco, one of the organisers of a party that brought Jackson to Brazil for his 87th birthday, said he was doing well.

“He is perfectly conscious, he is talking perfectly well without any problems, he is completely dynamic,” he said.

The fete marking Jackson’s birthday went ahead on July 25 without its guest of honour, with local media reporting he was not feeling well enough to attend.

Jackson is in the South American country partly to celebrate his 87th birthday – which was on Sunday (July 26).

Local media said he was absent from his own party because he was already in hospital.

Nexxing, the company that invited Jackson to Brazil, said he arrived in the South American nation on Wednesday (July 22) and attended several events, including a visit to a Sao Paulo soccer stadium, before falling ill.

Photos from his official website also show him dining in Sao Paulo restaurants.

He was due to leave Brazil on Tuesday (July 28).

Jackson has suffered minor strokes in the past, including one in 2012.
