Oliver Stone has said it was the right time to make a sequel to Wall Street, because leading man Michael Douglas has aged perfectly.

It has been 23 years since the Oscar-winning filmmaker's 1987 movie about greedy stockbroker Gordon Gekko, and Michael reprises the role in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.

"He has aged, like a fine wine - I think it's time to see him return," the director said.

Oliver - who made documentary movie South Of The Border about seven South American presidents - said the time was right for the film, which also stars Shia LaBeouf and British actress Carey Mulligan.

"I loved the idea of a Wall Street sequel. It's now my first franchise movie. To make a business movie and it turns into a business is amazing," he said.

"I was nicely recompensed to come back 23 years later to follow up the story, which I wanted to do because we've reached a new level of greed. I'm shocked at the exaggeration of wealth. I thought that era was coming to an end in 1987 but it kept going and has reached unbelievable proportions."

Calling for change, he continued: "The volatility of the world situation is still out there. There's no sense of stability and security. Wall Street is at the centre of it because of the greed."
