Crewe Alexandra boss wants 100% commitment from his players

STEVE Davis insists Crewe will no longer carry any passengers as he looks to get the club back on track.

Fresh from a morale-boosting 2-1 win at high-flying Morecambe, the new boss only wants players prepared live, eat and breathe Alex.

Max Clayton’s 93rd-minute winner together with a Nick Powell (79) wonder strike saw The Railwayman reverse a deficit for the first time this season.

Since replacing Dario Gradi, Davis has turned the focus on training to improving fitness.

And the 47-year-old gave a stark indication of the commitment required by offloading Antoni Sarcevic who promptly joined non-league Chester.

“Antoni said he didn’t want to be at the club so I didn’t want him around,” explained Davis.

“I don’t want that negativity around the place because it can spread.

“I only want people who want to play for Crewe, no-one else.

“That have to be here for the right reasons, I have a great bunch of players now who all want to sweat blood for the club.

“That’s the starting point, now I can work with that and improve them physically and mentally.

“Great team spirit and togetherness gets you through games when things aren’t going well and you can’t play the football you want.

“It’s only three points and only the start, there is a lot more to come.”

Davis still hopes to sign a striker and left-back before today’s loan deadline.

“I’ve had a few knock backs but we’ll keep going and we’re doing out damnedest,” he continued.

“I need a couple in to try and strength it.

“We’re in the bottom half of League Two and maybe it isn’t attractive at the moment so we have to push ourselves into a better position.

“From my point of view, I’d come to Crewe but I can’t make their decision.”

Now 16th, the Alex entertain Hereford on Saturday with four of their next five matches against sides below them in the table.

Davis knows a winning run can set them up nicely for better times ahead in the New Year.

“I’ve told the players there’s no point winning at Morecambe to let it slip against Hereford,” he continued.

“We have to give our supporters something to cheer about.

“They expect effort and commitment at the very least and by doing that, hopefully we can turn results around.

“Hereford will be scrapping for their lives near the bottom so we need to create a gap.

“It won’t be easy and we can’t be complacent.”
