Personal Overview - Has a background including journalism, broadcasting and political involvement working at Conservative Central Office. He appears to retain interests in Foreign Affairs, Europe and Broadcasting. Was removed from his post as Shadow Minister for London after defying an Opposition three line whip (by refusing to accept the Party's stance against Council's promoting homosexuality) over the Local Government Bill (Dec 1999). He then resigned from the Conservative Party to join Labour (December 1999) and was subsequently moved to the safe Labour seat of St. Helens in time for the 2001 General Election. As a Labour MP, he enjoyed a junior ministerial career for several years before entering the Cabinet in June 2007, taking on the Northern Ireland Portfolio. Gained an additional responsibility at the June 2009 reshuffle covering the coordination of Government Policy and Strategy, a post he held until the 2010 election. Despite not winning enough votes to be successful in the October 2010 Shadow Cabinet elections, he was co-opted back to his Shadow Northern Ireland post by party leader Ed Miliband in his initial reshuffle. However he stood down from the Labour front bench at the October 2011 reshuffle.

Personal Overview - Effectively replaced former UKIP MEP John Whittaker at the 2009 European Elections who he had worked for as an assistant at the Parliament for several years. Has an academic background as a lecturer in the Merseyside area. Politically, he has achieved relatively rapid promotion within the party in recent years, becoming Party Chairman in 2008. In terms of European politics, he has gained experience through his work for John Whittaker MEP, he has also acted as a political consultant to Godfrey Bloom MEP and has been Editor of the Bulletin from Brussels Magazine.
