A SPECIAL edition of BBC's Newsnight was filmed from Crewe Hall last night.

Jeremy Paxman, journalist and TV presenter, grilled senior politicians including Labour MP and Chief Whip Geoff Hoon, Lib Dem MP Vince Cable and Conservative MP Michael Gove.

They were joined by some of the by-election candidates, including Labour candidate Tamsin Dunwoody and Liberal Democrat candidate Elizabeth Shenton, along with an audience of voters.

During the lively debate, Crewe and Nantwich residents got a chance to air their views on issues that matter and their thoughts on the campaign itself.

Speaking after the show, Jeremy Paxman said that he wasn't surprised by the level of media attention, although a year ago he couldn't believe anything like this happening, given that Gwyneth Dunwoody was a popular Labour MP who held the seat for 34 years, most recently with a 7,078 majority.

He agreed that the national issues surrounding the Government and the results of the local elections signalled that things didn't look good for Labour, but it was very hard to say whether a Labour defeat would spell the end for Gordon Brown.

Commenting on the campaign, he said: "Sparring between party candidates is to be expected, and I quite enjoy it myself."

If this was directed at me Stuart - you will notice that party politics did not creep into my post. My complaint was against Paxo. But seeing that you did bring politics into it, did you as a blind Labour follower learn anything at all from that purported debate. If you did (and I will now get political) - that say's everything about the Labour Party and their supporters. Have you heard of the oxymoron,"intelligen

ce and New Labour". If you think Paxo did a good job, get out a dictionary and look up what "oxymoron" means. I think you will deduce what I am getting at.

How funny it is to read the moral outrage of the idiot Tory boys who try to take over every comments section on this website. To be fair to Mr Paxman he didn't have a chance to speak to their candidate because Timpson bottled it and didn't turn up.

This is the future under labour.
Vote labour and you get what you deserve.

I looked forward to this programme thinking that I was in for a mature debate on a structured basis with professional chairmanship. What a shambles - all due, as on similar previous occasions, to the idiot Paxman.
This man is vastly overated and to me is utterly hopeless and an insult to the participants and the viewing audience. What it achieved and what was learned is anyones guess, indeed, great play was made of the fact that the "studio" audience was drawn from a wide cross section of the constituency, of those I think 3 spoke, 2 of whom spoke on two occasions and with Hoon virtually taking the floor, the Conservative and Lib Dem reps hardly had a look in. The BBC should kick Paxman into the long grass - he messes up everything in which he is involved.

Iam surprised the coverage in this paper covers the after thoughts of paxman rather than what was taking place during the programe.
Labour rag me thinks.
Tamsin was shown to be the snob without a job.
