THE Co-operative plans to build 1,000 new houses on agricultural land in Crewe.

A public consultation will be held on Thursday, November 29, into the 242 acre-development on the Basford East site, south-east of the town centre.

The project, which the Co-op claims will create up to 4,000 jobs, will straddle the planned Crewe Green Link Road, joining the A500 to the A532.

The scheme will comprise houses, offices and commercial space, along with shops, a medical centre, a petrol station, a new primary school, and hotel and restaurants.

The Co-op said 33 per cent of the 98 hectare site would be green infrastructure, comprising open space, recreational areas, landscaping and wildlife corridors.

Cheshire East Council has allocated Basford East for general employment opportunities in line with the plans for the new link road.

Developers, The Co-operative Estates, and its agents, Spawforths, have organised a public consultation event at Weston All Saints Church Hall, between 3-7pm on Thursday, November 29.

Local residents are encouraged to attend and air their views on the proposals.

Following the public consultation, the Co-operative will submit an outline planning application to Cheshire East Council next year.
