THE southbound M6 in Cheshire has reopened after a fatal collision on Monday morning.

Nine vehicles were involved in a pile-up at junction 16 including two lorries, two vans and five cars.

The motorway was reopened between junction 16 and 18 just after 8.30pm on Monday.

Seven people received minor injuries, three received serious injuries, two of which are life threatening and one man has died.

Highways Agency Traffic Officers and Cheshire Police worked for nine hours to carefully recover vehicles from the crash site and free drivers stuck behind the collision.

Traffic was released slowly via Sandbach Services and junction 17 and the incident also had a knock-on effect on roads surrounding the area of the motorway − in particular the A54 and the A50.

The Highways Agency reopened the carriageway earlier this evening following work by contractors to clear debris and an engine oil spill.

  • Anyone with any information in relation to the incident is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 338 of December 10.
