FIREFIGHTERS from Crewe and across Cheshire had to extract water from a nearby canal to extinguish a fierce blaze at a farmhouse in Sandbach last night, Tuesday, July 2.

Crews are still damping down the smouldering remains of a barn and outbuildings at Brick Bank Farm, Dragons Lane, Moston, Sandbach.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service scrambled appliances to the fire just after 10pm last night, Tuesday July 2.

On arrival crews found a well-developed fire involving a wooden barn approximately 100x50 metres.

Four large cylinders were sited nearby and firefighters issued a call called for more engines and crews to be sent to the scene.

Ten fire engines were in attendance, from Sandbach, Middlewich, Crewe, Holmes Chapel, Winsford, Northwich and Congleton.

The fire involved three adjacent single storey wood and brick buildings.

Several cylinders exploded and crews battled to cool four 200 litre butane tanks with two ground monitor jets.

There are no reported injuries.

By 11.55pm last night, firefighters were using a specialist high volume pump unit to supply water to the scene from a nearby canal.

Crews continued to use ground monitor jets to cool the butane tanks and prevented the fire from spreading to the farmhouse.

By 12.55am early this morning, Wednesday July 3, crews had the fire under control and were continuing to cool cylinders.

Attendance at the scene began to be scaled back to six pumps.

As of 8.56am this morning, firefighters were still at the scene, with four ground monitors in use.

Damping down is due to continue for the next few hours.

The cause of the fire is presently unknown.
