A LARGE goods vehicle has overturned on the northbound sliproad of junction 16 on the M6.

The vehicle was carrying approx 25 tonnes of used cooking oil which spilt onto the slip road and the vehicle set on fire around 5.27am this morning, July 10.

Fire crews used approximately 1,200 litres of foam to extinguish the flames and specialist equipment to contain the oil, foam and water mixture from the incident.

This prevented the liquid from entering drains and nearby fields.

One person was taken to North Staffordshire Hospital by ambulance staff as a result of the incident.

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said the sliproad would remain closed for most of the day while the liquid is removed and the vehicle is put back onto its wheels and removed.

Environment Agency staff, Police and Highways Agency staff are in attendance at the incident.

Fire engines and specialist vehicles attended from Crewe, Sandbach, Winsford, Ellesmere Port, Warrington and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service all attended the blaze.
