Museum could be part of the town’s future
A MUSEUM could be built in Crewe if town councillors get their way.
At a meeting of the Economic Development Committee of Crewe Town Council on Tuesday, September 4, it was agreed to investigate the setting up of a town museum in Crewe.
Council leader Clr Kevin Hickson said during the meeting that it would be ‘tremendous’ to bring all of Crewe’s achievements in one place.
“Crewe is one of the few towns of its size in the UK not to have a town museum,” he said.
“Crewe has a rich industrial heritage and it is time this history is captured in one place in order to inform future generations of its famous past.
“There are many artefacts spread across the town and it would be tremendous to bring them all together in one place to celebrate Crewe’s achievements.”
The council told the Guardian it is keen to hear residents views on the idea and whether they think it’s a good idea.
And members stressed at this point no financial commitment has been made and if any such project is to go ahead it is anticipated that success would be dependent on seeking funding from a variety of sources.
Councillors also added a central location was seen as ideal, which could bring visitors into the town and potentially be home to other services such as a Tourist Information Centre.
Clr Tony Davison, committee chair, added the museum could highlight the town’s rich industrial past – and present.
“It is important to have a firm understanding of one’s history before one can plan successfully for the future,” he said.
“Crewe is ideally placed to be a town which can build on its solid industrial foundations and attract new businesses, especially in the world of advanced manufacturing, but we should never forget what put us here in the first place.”
