A FORMER shipyard boss from Crewe has been awarded a prestigious medal for his efforts to help the community.
Robert Wheatley was presented with a British Empire Medal at St Cuthbert’s Church, Cumbria, in particular for his work for the church and his contributions to help improve the community.
Despite leaving the area in 1966 Robert has maintained an interest in the Crewe community, and continues to do so even after his retirement 20 years ago.
He said: “In my time with Crewe I have helped raise funds for many great causes including to help build a children’s play area which was the only one at the time.
“I spend a lot of my time now helping to raise funds for my local church in Aldingham.
“I am also the town’s historian and have been a member of the parish council.
“In the past seven years I have helped raise up to £70,000 for the church to be renovated through various ways such as garden parties and family parties, all of which promotes good morale within the community.
“I am now helping to raise the funds for further improvements to the church which will amount to £92,000.
“Fifteen years into retirement I began to help with the running of school mornings where I help the children to get on to the buses so that parents can get to work on time.”
Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria, Claire Hensman, was in attendance at the ceremony and had the role of awarding Robert with the medal.
Robert added: “I am absolutely delighted, it is a great honour and privilege to have been recognised for my efforts over these years.
“It really came as a surprise to me.
“I was invited to the garden party at Buckingham Palace which was also a huge honour.
“However we chose to stage the ceremony at St Cuthbert’s church in Aldingham where I have done most of my work, it seemed like it was the most fitting place.
“We invited 120 guests, and received a great reception, we had a fantastic day.”
