DRIVERS are warned to take extra care on the roads today, following the heavy rainfall overnight which is expected to continue throughout the day.
Sgt Rick Weaver of Cheshire′s Roads Policing Unit said: "Roads are at their most slippery and dangerous when it rains following a long dry spell. That is because dust, oil and diesel deposits build up on the road surface and then mixes with the rain water."
Further rain is expected throughout today and into the weekend.
Advice to drivers: - Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop. Stopping distances will be at least double those required for stopping on dry roads.
- If the steering becomes unresponsive it probably means that water is preventing the tyres from gripping the road surface, ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually.
- Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other motorists.
- Keep your lights and windscreen clean.
