Special steam visit at Crewe Heritage Centre
A SISTER locomotive of the world famous Mallard steam engine will make a special trip to Crewe this weekend.
60009 Union of South Africa will be at the Heritage Centre hauling rides along the centre’s demonstration line on Sunday, September 15.
The engine was recently at York’s National Rail Museum, where she formed part of the Great Gathering of the six extant Gresley A4 Pacifics.
Bittern, Sir Nigel Gresley and Union of South Africa joined Dwight D Eisenhower and Dominion of Canada on the museum’s turntable in the Great Hall.
The latter two locomotives made the trip from Wisconsin and Quebec respectively to form part of the 75th anniversary celebrations of Mallard’s 126 mph world steam record, set at Stoke Bank, Grantham, in 1938.
A spokesman for Crewe Heritage Centre said: “Why not come along for a ride, talk to the train crew and see what one of these record breaking beasts sounds and looks like?”
