Fire volunteers celebrate anniversary in vintage style
AWARD-winning volunteers from Shavington celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a trip in a vintage fire engine.
Andrew and Margaret Jeffery, both 71, married on September 14 1963 when Andrew was a firefighter in Bristol.
They now volunteer for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS), helping out with the Cheshire East Safety Team at Station open days, the Cheshire Show and assisting young people on The Prince’s Trust Team Programme.
A spokesman for CFRS said: “Between them, in the last year alone, they have given the service a gold-plated 2,364 hours of their own time to volunteer, and were each awarded the CFRS Gold Achievement Volunteer Certificate earlier this year.
“In a surprise celebration, Andrew and Margaret were presented with a gift from Chief Fire Officer Paul Hancock and given a tour in one of the Service’s vintage fire engines, a Dennis F8, coincidentally the very model that Andrew used to drive in Bristol.”
This fire engine was bought by Cheshire County Fire Brigade in 1953 and served at Nantwich and Audlem fire stations.
In its later years it served as a spare appliance before being handed over to the historical society for preservation in the mid 1970s.
