A SPECIAL policing operation in Crewe to coincide with England’s crucial world cup qualifier against Poland on October 15 passed without serious incident.

As part of a pre planned operation, officers and PCSOs patrolled the streets, pubs and bars of the town centre and outlying areas to ensure that those who were out to enjoy the football did so in a safe environment.

One man was arrested for being drunk and disorderly on Edleston Road, and a second man was given a Direction To Leave notice – meaning he must leave the area or face arrest.

There were no other incidents of serious violence or disorder reported during, or following the game.

Inspector Christian Watkins said “I am pleased that the operation was a success. Due to a visible policing presence, would-be troublemakers were dealt with swiftly by patrols out and about on our streets and there were no serious incidents reported.”

Britain’s large population of Polish expats ensured a lively atmosphere at Wembley on Tuesday evening.

More than 18,000 fans made up the away ticketing allocation.

England won the final group qualifying game for 2014’s world cup thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard.

The 2-0 win means that Roy Hodgson’s squad will fly to Brazil to compete in the tournament next summer.
