A new activity group for people with dementia is being launched by Alzheimer’s Society in Haslington, Crewe.

The activity group provides a social atmosphere that aims to help people with dementia keep physically and mentally active as well as helping people express themselves.

The group could also help prevent isolation, loneliness and depression, which 85 per cent of people with dementia say they struggle with.

People who attend will be able to take part in Alzheimer's Society’s ‘Reading Together’ group, chatting about poetry and extracts from stories to share their views and the memories that are recalled. Jo Hawkins, operations manager for Alzheimer's Society in Cheshire & St Helens said: ‘Activity groups can make a huge difference to people’s sense of wellbeing. Attendees can get involved in all sorts of activities including reading, singing and dance. The service enables people with dementia to meet other people in a similar situation whilst also having fun and trying out new things. ‘There are more than 6,000 people living with dementia in Cheshire East and this will rise by 48% in 2021 but with the right support people can live well with the condition for a number of years.’ The Reading Group will take place on Friday mornings in Yoxall Village Hall, Crewe Road, Haslington, CW1 5QY between 10am and noon.
