CREWE Town Council wishes to appeal to local brass bands, musicians etc. and to see if the musical community could rise to the challenge of playing the Last Post from the ‘outbreak’ of WW1 (August 2014) each day at 6pm at the War Memorial in the Town.

The council hope this could then be done for the ‘duration’ of the war i.e. through to 2018 (November). To do this they would need the help of a core of hardy souls willing to perform on a rotational basis.

Cllr Joy Bratherton who is leading on the Town Council’s contribution to the 100th anniversary events to mark WW1 said: “The Council wishes to support the various commemorations to mark the outbreak of WW1 and highlight the significance of our shared history. We are picking up on the daily events at the Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium and are seeking the help of the musical community in Crewe and the surrounding area to find a cadre of musicians willing to perform the Last Post daily on a rotational basis.

“The challenge is not to miss a single evening come wind or high rains and to give a focus for a daily act of remembrance’ ‘We see this as highly symbolic and emotive way to try to show the kind of commitment that was shown by our forebears. We are also aware this is a real commitment for anyone or group to take on, but we hope that a large enough group could be established in order that group pride makes this happen and that not a day is missed.

“As a Council we would hope to show in some small way our gratitude for such a level of commitment.’
