CREWE allotment holders are looking forward to growing places in 2014 after the town council pledged financial backing for plots.

The council’s finance and resources committee cemented relations with the newly formed Crewe Town Allotment Federation at its meeting on December 17.

The Federation will manage all aspects of the allotment operations and provide a single voice for the eleven individual associations.

The council has undertaken to support the development at the sites by providing capital to revitalise plots and address past neglect.

Clr Simon Yates, chair of the finance and resources committee said: “We are really pleased that the federation has moved so quickly to grab the opportunity of self-management and we are looking forward to working with them and providing capital to ensure the town has allotments that it can be proud of.

“It is wonderful that the people of Crewe will be able to use such facilities and we encourage anyone thinking about an allotment to contact the Federation.

“The council plans to reinstate the allotment prize and hopes that a September market can be arranged in the town to show off the fruits of the allotment holder’s labour.

“Home grown food is the best and in these times the produce from allotments can help improve diet and reduce household costs.”
