POLICE said a robust policing presence in Crewe on Saturday, April 12, meant that the crucial Crewe Alexander Vs Wolves fixture passed without serious incident.

Two arrests were made during the operation, which focused around the Gresty Road, Nantwich Road and train station areas.

There were additional police resources, supported by officers from the British Transport Police to ensure supporters from both teams were able to make their way safely to the ground.

Kick off took place at 3.07pm as a mark of respect for the anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy.

One arrest was made outside the ground shortly after kick off, when a man was arrested for being drunk and disorderly. Two further arrests were made for assault.

Superintendent Luke McDonnell, who oversaw this afternoon’s policing operation, said: “As with any football fixture of this nature, our priority is the safety other match-goers and the local community, and to ensure that their safety is not compromised by providing a visible and robust policing presence in and around the ground.

“We worked in co-operation with partners within our community – including local licensees, representatives from both Clubs, West Midlands Police and the British Transport Police to ensure that the fixture went ahead peacefully.

“Happily, by having extensive plans in place and experience of policing this type of event, the match passed without serious incident and only 3 arrests were made.”

Officers from Crewe Neighbourhood Policing Unit provided a uniformed presence in the areas of Nantwich Road and Gresty Road, as well as inside the ground itself to support the stewarding operation.

Wolves secured promotion back to the Championship with a 2-0 victory in the game, which leaves Crewe in the relegation zone.
