FUNDRAISERS proved it is all about the CLIMB at South Cheshire College last week.

Up to 175 climbers gathered at the college’s climbing wall on May 11 to face an epic ‘Everest Challenge’.

Climbers tackled the wall 885 times between them, covering 8,850 metres - equivalent to the height of Mount Everest.

The aim of the event was to raise money for CLIMB (National Information Centre for Metabolic Diseases) and a total of £600 was raised for the Crewe-based charity on the day.

Fiona Williams, executive assistant at CLIMB, said: “To receive such a fantastic donation means so much to CLIMB and this will be a big boost in helping all those families who are affected by metabolic diseases. We are very grateful for the donation.”

The event was co-organised by Graham Chafer, head of community leisure at South Cheshire College, fitness instructor Jon Venables and Graham Lant, leader for the Wrensbury Cub group.

It was jointly sponsored by the Scouts movement, Cotswold Outdoor Ltd, and South Cheshire College, and was supported by the Crewe and Nantwich Lions Club.

Graham thanked everyone who sponsored and entered the challenge.

“This was a fantastic challenge and it was wonderful to see so many people of different ages from across the community make the most of our climbing facility,” he added.

“We hope that we can repeat this excellent fundraising initiative again in the future because it was so successful and gave many young people to experience climbing for the first time.”

Crewe and Nantwich MP Edward Timpson officially launched the event and cheered on son Sam, who joined fellow cubs in scaling the wall.

He said: “This was an inspired idea. Graham and everyone at South Cheshire College deserve huge plaudits for bringing together local cubs and scouts, along with many others, to take on the ultimate climbing challenge and raise funds for CLIMB at the same time.”
