CREWE Town Council was keeping it in the family this week during a unique mayor making ceremony.

The authority voted to elect clr Pam Minshall and clr Benn Minshall as mayor and deputy mayor of Crewe respectively.

It’s thought it could be the first time a council has ever elected grandmother and grandson to the ceremonial roles on the same night.

“It gave me great pleasure to participate in a ceremony where I was made mayor, but doubly so to have Benn elected as deputy mayor. Of course we will be a great team,” said clr Minshall.

“I want to pay my respects to the hard work put in by Cllr Irene Faseyi and Clr Margaret Martin over the last twelve months.

“Irene is a credit to the town and it is fitting that she should be the first mayor in the new era of the new town council.

“I feel privileged to serve the town where I have spent my life. Crewe is a town I cherish.”

Clr Minshall chose the Leighton Hospital Scanner Appeal, the Cheshire Buddies Scheme and Churches Together in Crewe Nightshelter as her charities of the year.

Clr Benn Minshall added: “It is really great to serve on the council, but also to serve as deputy mayor, and to support ‘Gran’ as the mayor is something I could never have dreamed about.

“I am committed to helping the town and looking forward to meeting even more people when out and about in the Town.”
