VOLUNTEERS have been helping to preserve the heritage and environment of Hurleston Locks.

The team from United Utilities got their hands dirty at the lock, which is the gateway to the Llangollen Canal. The company uses water from here to supply Crewe and Nantwich.

The day of volunteering launched a new partnership between United Utilities and the Canal and River Trust.

“The partnership will help to make sure the company continues to provide safe drinking water to customers, and give employees the opportunity to offer something back to the community,” said Kate Snow, United Utilities South Area water catchment manager.

“We made a real difference at the volunteering day, and took a great deal of satisfaction in seeing the area look so much smarter by the end of the day.

“It was also the ideal opportunity to speak to canal boat crews about our drinking water supply here and the need to protect it.”

Dozens of United Utilities staff are due to take part in more volunteer days over the coming months.
