CREWE Town Council leader, Kevin Hickson, congratulated the partnership who secured Government funding for the town’s new University Technical College (UTC).
Cheshire East Council, Bentley Motors, Manchester Metropolitan University, MP Edward Timpson and others businesses and stakeholders played a part in delivering the new centre for engineering expertise – which will operational by 2016.
The Crewe UTC will provide a different option for students leaving school and will help to bridge the local engineering skills gap faced by major local employers.
Clr Hickson hailed the centre as ‘a real opportunity to boost the employability of some of our town’s young people’.
A town council spokesman added: “Siting the college at the former Victoria School on Meredith Street will improve what is at the moment an eyesore and should increase footfall in the town centre.
“The Town Council looks forward to being consulted on detailed plans which amongst other things will need to take account of growing concerns about parking in the area.”
Commenting on the successful UTC Crewe bid, Bentley’s member of the board for human resources, Dr Ariane Reinhart, added: “UTC Crewe is fantastic news for Crewe, local students and for Bentley.
“It will enhance the local community, boosting skills, education and employability, for the benefit of individuals and many organisations."
