VISITORS to Nantwich Museum can get hands on with priceless local treasures next weekend.

Roman coins and brooches, a Saxon pendant cross and pottery dating over a 600 year period feature among the museum’s Treasures of Nantwich collection.

Locals are invited to take in their own items for the display during a special open day on August 16, and offer their thoughts on how the exhibition can develop under £8,250 funding from the Art Fund’s Treasure Plus scheme.

“Visitors will have the opportunity to handle objects, find out more about how they were found and see the museum's treasures up close,” said spokesman, Graham Dodd.

“They are also invited to take in their own treasures of Nantwich. It is a chance to have a go at identifying objects, meet the detectorist who found the museum's latest acquisition – a Tudor dress hook – and help to decide what the new display should look like and how these important finds should be interpreted.”

The Treasures of Nantwich exhibition helps shed light on the lives of people who once lived in the town and the surrounding area.

The Treasure Plus grant will be used for the acquisition of a new display case, revised interpretations of the objects and interactives to involve visitors.

Particular attention is being paid to the needs of children, boosting the museum’s work with local schools.
