ONE lane has been reopened on the M56 but police are still warning motorists of long delays after a lorry collided with barriers on the Weaver Viaduct.

The incident happened at 10.15am and the lorry came to a rest on the embankment below.

The incident has caused substantial damage to a safety barrier as well as a large amount of diesel fuel and engine oil spilled on the road.

Emergency services remain at the scene of the collision, and are likely to be there for some time.

A police spokesman said: "Police would like to take the opportunity to thank those motorists who have been caught up in the congestion, for their patience. If anyone is caught in tailbacks, and is experiencing any welfare issues, police can be contacted on 101 in a non emergency situation, and 999 in the event of an emergency only."

Highways Agency officers are trying to release trapped traffic stuck after junction 12 by turning them around on the westbound side to join the diversion route via the southbound A557, westbound A56 and northbound A5117.

The route is not suitable for vehicles longer than 14ft 6in.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes if possible.

The closure is likely to be in place for some time, and motorists are advised that there will be congestion in the area.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision to contact police on the non emergency number 101, quoting incident number 211 of 12/08/2014.
