NANTWICH Singers will celebrate the 25 years service for their conductor, Tony Metcalfe.

Tony has been at the Singers’ helm for a quarter of a century, and the group will mark the achievement by singing some of his favourite choral works at St Mary’s Church, Nantwich on Saturday October 25.

Among them will be Fauré's Requiem and Cantique de Jean Racine, and extracts from Hungarian composer Kodaly’s Missa Brevis and Vaughan Williams’ unaccompanied 8-part setting Mass in G Minor, which was inspired by England’s medieval architecture and 16th century composers.

Tony said it had been a difficult task to pick out his favourites.

“How do you start to select music from 25 years of concert giving?” he said.

The Nantwich Singers were known as Tudor Consort when Tony became their conductor in 1989. The group had been founded by Michael Bax in the seventies.

Since Tony became conductor, the choir, which meet weekly, have given many memorable concerts in and around Nantwich and regularly perform at cathedrals throughout the UK.

The Fauré will be performed with a newly-arranged and unusual accompaniment of harpist Lauren Scott, organist Graham Eccles, cellist Diane Tice and violinist Peter Lewis.

Tickets for the concert, which start at 7.30pm, are £10, including refreshments, and are on sale from the church shop, at Think About IT in Hospital Street or on the door.
