DAVID Cameron paid a visit to the Guardian's offices this week and spoke about how HS2 will affect Crewe.

The Prime Minister told the Guardian he believed the multi-billion project was needed to help capacity issues on the West Coast Mainline.

It was announced last week that Crewe would be home to the north west hub.

But hundreds of homeowners in the county have found themselves in limbo after the route was published in 2013.

"First of all I think it is a really important national project," he said.

"We mustn't let our economy become unbalanced between London and the rest and we really want to see a rebalanced economy and HS2 and the electrification of the Trans-Pennine line plus potentially HS3 I think do offer an opportunity for what we call the Northern Powerhouse, the linking together of some of the great cities of the north as a counter to London, so I think it is really important project.

"It is not just about high speed at which you can go from Manchester to London, it is about capacity because we need a new West Coast Mainline, we need the capacity of having more trains and more track.

"All these things matter but I do understand the concerns of the people who are potentially on the route and we will have generous compensation arrangement and they will be kicking in from the fund that is there available already, to buy peoples house at 100 per cent of the market value but we will be saying more about that in the months to come."
