THE family of a cyclist who died after a collision with a coach near Nantwich has paid tribute to him.

Robert Betteley, 59, who lived in the area, was treated by paramedics on the scene after the collision on the A530 Middlewich Road at 2.10pm on Tuesday, January 13.

Robert received serious injuries and despite treatment at the scene from paramedics, he died a short time later at Leighton Hospital.

In a tribute, his family said: “Robert was a loving husband, father, grandfather brother and good friend too many.

“A truly remarkable person. Who will be well and truly missed by all.”

Nantwich Town councillor Penny Butterill, of Nantwich North and West Ward on Cheshire East Council, said: “It’s tragic and my heart goes out to the relatives of the man.”

The A530 has seen a number of deaths over the last few years despite a number of safety measures being put in place.

Cyclist Stewart Gandy died in November 2012 after a collision with a lorry at Baddington Bridge and there have been several casualties on the stretch of the road near to Alvaston Hall.

Cllr Butterill said the issue needs to be addressed once again to avoid further tragedy.

“It’s a bad road and I hope the Highways Agency take it up again, although I don’t know what they can do,” she added.

A 57-year-old man has been arrested and is currently on bail.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have seen the bicycle or the silver coach are urged to contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident 403 of January 13, 2015.
