AN 18-YEAR-OLD entrepreneur is hoping to reel in more business in 2015 after the Crewe chip shop he bought in memory of his granddad fought the big fish to make it through the year unscathed.

With the help of his family, Shane Tench, 18, took over the Crewe Town Fryer last April, renaming it Tenchy's Quality Fish & Chips.

The bold move came around a year after the teen lost his granddad, Arty Smith, whom he shared an unbreakable bond with.

“It’s very tiring,” Shane said. “When my friends have got girlfriends and partying, I’m working 12 hour shifts. I do things most 18-year-olds don’t do.

“I didn’t do very well at school. My dream was to be an actor but I gave it all up. I gave up everything. This isn’t just a job for me, this is my life.”

Shane, who said he was bullied at school, said he made the life-changing decision to run his own business after reminiscing with the previous owners about visiting the chippy with Arty.

He said: “I had got talking to the owner of the Crewe Town Fryer and we got talking about how much my granddad loved the fish and chips of the previous owners. We used go when I as a kid.

“My granddad always used to tell us all to never be scared on making life changing decisions. A year after her died I was about the make the biggest decision of my life.”

With his granddad never far from his mind, Shane made steps to ensure Arty’s spirit has been kept alive.

He said: “He always use to tell me how much he loved the beef dripping that everyone use to fry in and often moaned that there is not any good chip shops in Crewe that cooks the old fashioned way.

“He’s the type of man who would go to a fish and chip shop and moan about it, then go back the next week. He’d moan about everything.

“The menus on the boards are the same as when we used to come. Sometimes, when I stand behind the counter I see images of him.

“I hope he is looking down on me and is proud of what I’m doing.”

Tenchy's Quality Fish & Chips is offering 10% orders over £5 to customers who bring a copy of the Crewe and Nantwich Guardian into the chip shop.
