A DECISION to allow a housing development on a disused bowling green in Nantwich is set to be made next week.

Black and White Cheshire LTD have proposed to build seven townhouse on the vacant bowling green within the grounds of the Residence Restaurant and Bar in Nantwich, which is a Grade II* Listed Building.

The proposals have gone through several revisions since the original planning application was submitted in December, 2013.

However, planning documents submitted by Cheshire East Council have concluded that ‘there is no requirement for an additional bowling green’.

The documents continued: “The proposal would not have a detrimental impact on any archaeological remains.

“It has been demonstrated that that the proposal is acceptable in terms of its impact on Residential Amenity, Conservation Area, the setting of a Listed Building and Highway Safety.”

A previous application had proposed building a hotel on the site that would be linked to Residence, though this never came to fruition.

That particular agreement involved a Section 106 agreement to pay a sum between £60-80,000 to Barony Bowling Club to compensate for vacating the bowling green

However it is unclear whether the latest proposals will honour that agreement.

In comments submitted to Cheshire East Council in 2014, Nantwich Town Council said: “The Town Council considers that a similar agreement should apply to any planning permission given for this development and that this sum should be made available to the displaced bowling club.”

Nantwich Town Council had given their support to the Hotel proposals, but has highlighted particular several concerns for the plans submitted by Black and White LTD.

Nantwich Town Council said: “The Town Council is disappointed that a potential employment site is now to be developed with yet more housing.

“Whilst the site is within the settlement boundary there would be greater benefits to the local economy and tourism if the site was developed to provide hotel accommodation as was previously proposed.”

John Roberts, Secretary of Nantwich Park Road Bowling Club said the bowling green is now in ‘utter disrepair’ and it is most unlikely it could be used for the purpose originally intended.

The application will be discussed before Cheshire East’s Planning Committee on Wednesday, February 25.
