POLICE bosses at Cheshire Constabulary have vowed to abide by a set of commitments to reflect the needs and expectations of residents.

The launch of the We're Here promises by chief constable Simon Byrne and police and crime commissioner John Dwyer outline what the public can expect from the force.

The move had been hailed as a 'bold step' by senior figures in the constabulary as it is the first in England to publish a tangible set of written commitments to which the force can be held accountable for.

These promises will shape the way the officers and staff at Cheshire Police operate and about sticking to a timely and swift response when a member of the public is in need.

Chief constable Byrne said: "The idea behind it is like any big organisation.

"We spend a lot of money on behalf of the public. People need to be able to hold us to account if we let them down and we will listen to advice to improve the service."

Chief constable Byrne said this will be a clear method to see how the service can improve if the commitments are not adhered to.

He said: "Sometimes if a promise is broken, it's about learning from that. We will give feedback to staff and officers to help us [continue to improve].

"Sometimes - if it's more fundamental - it will be about looking at how we deploy and allocate resources."

But what can we expected from the new promises? Here are five things the Warrington Guardian discovered today during the Cheshire Police press conference.

1. There are 16 promises that those within Cheshire Police have agreed to stick to.

2. Officers are expected to attend emergency calls within 15 minutes and non-emergency calls within 60 minutes

3. Victims of crime will be provided with a named point of contact who will keep them up-to-date on the progress of a case.

4. If a decision is made to stop any further investigation or if a case does not progress to court, the victim will be informed of the reasons why.

5. Details of officers in the community will be more widely published to ensure they are more accessible.
