A COMMUNITY leader who fought for Davenham bypass to be built is standing down from his role after more than 30 years.

The village voted Cllr Brian Robinson on to Davenham Parish Council in 1979 and he has been a councillor since then, missing just one term throughout the decades.

But the 80-year-old, from London Road, has said that he does not intend to stand again in May.

"I don't like the idea of still being a parish councillor when I'm 84 ," he said.

"I need to concentrate on my own affairs."

Cllr Robinson moved to Davenham in 1975 and was soon swept up in trying to make a difference in the village.

He said: "Two days after I moved in I spoke to various people, including my neighbour Ken Anderson and Arthur Wood, about doing something about the amount of traffic.

"We formed Davenham Action Group and, as there was an election in 1976, we had a campaign to get two of our members on the council because they didn't think there were any traffic problems then.

"We got Arthur on the parish council and Vale Royal Borough Council and Ken on the parish but I didn't get involved in the parish council until three years later in 1979 at the next election.

"I've missed one term in that time but think it's time to pack up."

It took the campaign group and parish council around 20 years before the A533 was built.

Cllr Robinson also worked on a project transform Laburnum Road field from a muddy field to a usable facility for the whole community.

He said: "We started off with the action group and then I got involved in lots of other things to do with the parish.

"I've enjoyed just trying to help to do things."
