ENTERPRISING Entry Level students branched out into the community to serve up a tasty lunch for church pensioners.

The South Cheshire College Hospitality and Catering group delivered a two course meal for local residents who attend the Tea Club at Union Street Baptist Church in Crewe.

Twenty residents tucked into a cottage pie with vegetables main course followed by apple pie and custard which was all prepared in the newly-fitted church kitchen.

Students worked hard to prepare and serve the dishes under the guidance of Hospitality and Catering Lecturer Julia Bolam, Personal Development Tutor Sarah Iggo and Learner Support Mentor Jane Minshull.

Church stewards Malcolm and Sandra Riley have been running an afternoon Tea Club at the church for several weeks but met with Head of Entry Level Jacqui Gregory to discuss the lunch club idea.

People who attend the afternoon Tea Club were invited in earlier than usual for their lunch before they continued with their normal afternoon quiz, games and other fun activities.

Following the success, of the lunch, Malcolm and Sandra are hoping it will now become a regular fixture in the church calendar.

Malcolm said: “Everyone had a fantastic time at the Tea Club and the meal was excellent.

“The students were a great team, the meal was expertly served and all the clients’ needs were attended to.

“The cooperation between students was a credit to the tuition and care they receive at the College.

“On behalf of the church, I express our thanks to South Cheshire College and this event helped us to realise our dream of the church kitchen being utilised to help the wellbeing of the local community.”
