VE Day commemorations will take place in Nantwich to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe.

Commemorations will begin at 12.30pm on Friday, May 8 in Nantwich Town Centre, opening with Redshift Radio and music from the era.

Audiences will be able to enjoy Gilly the Song Bird and a celebratory sing-along, followed by performances from Stapeley Broad Lane and Weaver Primary School Choirs.

St Anne’s Primary School will also join in with the entertainment and local act Josh Whittaker will perform a number of songs.

At 2.35pm Reverend Barry Wilson from St Mary’s Church, Nantwich Mayor, Cllr Christine Farrall and The British Legion, will process into the town and welcome everyone.

The British Legion will move on to lead an Act of Remembrance including the laying of wreaths and a national two minute silence. The celebration will close with the Funky Choir at 3.15pm.

Cllr Farrall said: “As this is a British Legion led event, we wanted the younger generation involved so they can remember the sacrifice.

“Without their sacrifice all of these people wouldn’t be here today.

“It’s really a message to the younger generation, to respect the end of the Second World War in Europe and all of those who fought and gave their lives so we can have the freedom we have today.”

Local shops have also been asked to take part by decorating their windows accordingly and the day promises to be an exciting community day for young and old.

In the event of poor weather, all entertainment will be moved to St Mary’s Church.
