THE winners of a creative writing competition that asked budding writers to share their memories of Crewe shared their tales to a packed audience.

Telling Tales of Crewe Writing Competition was launched by Crewe Town Council and Creative Crewe in April.

The competition encouraged people to write down their most treasured memories of Crewe, and saw a slew of writers flood the council with Crewe tales.

Councillor Pam Minshall, mayor of Crewe, added: “The stories shared provided a fascinating and personal insight into Crewe. “It really made judging very tough and I would like to thank all those who took part.”

Neve Kinnest, winner of the under 18s category, wowed judges with her story of the 140th anniversary celebrations of her school, Wistaston Church Lane Primary School.

Lesley Spray, winner of the over 18s category, shared her tale of sitting in the gutter outside Christ Church at a family wedding.

Both Lesley and Neve joined other local writers, students and renowned poets to perform their work at the Creative Crewe Poetry Evening in Queens Park.

Carol Wilkinson, chairman of Creative Crewe, said: “Both the evening and the competition were a great success with many people sharing their stories of Crewe. We can’t wait to hear more.”

The next partnership event between Crewe Town Council and Creative Crewe will be on Saturday, May 30 for the BIG Event.

The BIG Event, which incorporates a handmade arts and crafts market with live performances, takes place at Victoria Centre Square from 10.am to 4.00pm.
