THE Great Britain Special Olympics Rhythmic Gymnastics Team will perform at Crewe’s Armed Forces Picnic in the Park this month.

The team, which trains at the Cheshire Academy of Integrated Sports and Arts in Broad Street, Crewe, will take to the stage in Queen’s Park at 12pm Sunday, June 28.

Eight girls, six of whom are from Crewe, will be jetting off to Los Angeles on July 20 to compete at the XIV World Special Olympic Games.

The games, which are held every four years, will comprise of over 7,000 disabled competitors from over 150 different countries competing at over 20 different sports.

Cllr Dennis Straine-Francis, Mayor of Crewe, said: “We are really excited to see the GB Rhythmic Gymnasts in action before they fly off to the Special Olympics for an exclusive preview of their routines.

“I hope that everyone in Crewe will join me in the Park on June 28 to wish them good luck from the town.”

A wide range of entertainment is planned for the Picnic in the Park, including performances from a variety of local performers.

Local dance groups X Academy Theatre School and Catherine Fraser Irish Dancers will perform throughout the day.

A short service led by Reverend Tim Watson will be held at 1pm to honour current and ex-serviceman.

“We are delighted to be able to offer serving and ex-service personnel a free afternoon tea whilst they enjoy the day’s entertainments and activities.”
