A LOYAL shopper has thanked a Crewe convenience store after they presented her with a trio of gifts to mark her 100th birthday.

Olwyn Wood has shopped at the Spar store on Rope Lane since it began trading 21 years ago.

So to mark her landmark birthday on June 11, staff presented customer Mrs Wood with a bouquet of flowers, chocolates and £30 to spend in-store.

Mrs Wood said: "I've been shopping here for many years now and everyone has always been so lovely.

“This was a wonderful surprise and I thank everyone for the effort they have gone to.”

As well as her gifts from Spar, Mrs Wood also received another extra special gift – a telegram from the Queen.

She explained: “I received my telegram from the Queen on my birthday, which I was awfully excited about, and this just helped to make the day even more memorable."

Sales assistant June Norris and Post Office supervisor Marie Whittingham, who handed over the gift, have known Mrs Wood for more than 20 years both as a friend and customer.

Mrs Wood has shopped at the store since it opened in 1994.

Spar store manager Shaun Procter said: "Getting involved in celebrating the century milestone of one of our oldest customers didn't require a second thought.

“The community spirit this store is built on is strong and we continue to show this in the sincerest possible manner where we can.

“Marie, in collaboration with June and Mrs Wood's daughter, suggested we surprise Mrs Wood. This has been in the pipeline for over two months.”
