THE sun shined bright in Crewe as hundreds flooded Queen’s Park to mark Armed Forces Day.

Picnic in the Park, which took place on Sunday, June 28, was formally opened by Cllr Dennis Straine-Francis, mayor of Crewe

The event, which was organised by Creative Crewe, Cheshire Youth United and Crewe Town Council, looked to commemorate members of the armed forces.

“What a wonderful day,” Cllr Straine-Francis said. “It was great to see Queen’s Park filled with so many people.

“On behalf of the Town Council, I would like to thank everyone who came along and the volunteers who worked so hard to make this day happen.”

The Great British Special Olympic Rhythmic Gymnastics Team, who are currently preparing to compete in the XIV World Special Olympics, were the first of many performers on the day.

As well as a range of activities, the Royal British Legion Crewe branch organised a parade, which included local Scouts, Sea Cadets, Boys Brigade and Army Cadets.

The group proudly marched from the Clock Tower to the War Memorial for a short service, led by Reverend Tim Watson of Christ Church and Restore SMC, to honour servicemen past and present.

Alice Dean, Cheshire Youth United development manager, said: “Armed Forces Picnic in the Park was fantastic.

“Cheshire Youth United members in Crewe had an excellent time and it was a great opportunity for them to demonstrate first hand to the community what they are all about.”
