A MEMORIAL service will be held in Crewe later this year to remember the lives lost in the First World War.

The service will be held on Remembrance Sunday in Memorial Square on November 8, from 11am.

The event, which has previously been organised by Cheshire East Council, is the first year Crewe Town Council have organised a parade and service.

Cllr Dennis Straine-Francis, mayor of Crewe, said: "I’m terribly proud to be involved with Remembrance Sunday this year and hope that the good people of Crewe will turnout in their thousands to show their respect and mark the silence on the November 8.

“We want to make sure everyone who wishes to participate can be involved.”

Up and down the UK cities, towns and villages will hold Remembrance Sunday ceremonies at war memorials and lay wreaths of remembrance poppies.

Two minutes' silence will be held across the UK at 11am, which marks the end of hostilities in the First World War in 1918.

Crewe Town Council are appealing to the people of Crewe to support the event, and has asked any community groups wishing to lay wreaths to contact them.

Cllr Straine-Francis said: “I am thrilled to be involved this year with such an important occasion.

“Could I encourage those of you who have participated in the past or who wish to make this their first year to contact the town council so that we can ensure things go smoothly on what is such an important day.

“Anniversaries come thick and fast, it is now 2015 and this is an opportunity to show special reverence to those who fell in 1915 along with all those who gave their tomorrow for our today.”

Residents are warned that road closures will be in place and to ask Crewe to fall silent at 11am on the November 8
