PENSIONERS came out in force to celebrate Older People’s Day in Crewe.

More than 140 older people from the South Cheshire Pensioners Association gathered at The Alexandra Stadium on Thursday, October 1.

The afternoon featured entertainment from the Bill Bailey Jazz Band and the Funkychoir.com.

Guests were also treated to an afternoon cream tea served by the Crewe Alex Social Secretary, Sarah Jones, and her team.

Chairman of the South Cheshire Pensioners Association, Kevan Larkin, said: “We are grateful for all the support we have received as without it, we wouldn’t have been able to have had such a great event.

“The aim of the afternoon was to try and combat social isolation and loneliness that older people often face. Everyone who attended had a great time so I think we succeeded.”

Older People’s Day was established by the United Nations over 25 years ago with an aim to celebrate the contribution older people make to their community.

The Crewe event was supported by Cheshire Community Foundation, Bluebird Care, Crewe Alexandra Football Club and Crewe Town Council.

Cllr Dennis Straine-Francis, mayor of Crewe, said: “The event demonstrates the vibrancy and energy that exists amongst older people in Crewe.

“We as a town council are pleased to have been able to support the Pensioners Association with this event and we look forward to hearing their plans for next year and hope to join them again.”
