CHESHIRE Police has told the Guardian it has no record of any death threats made against the leader of Cheshire East Council.

Cllr Michael Jones made the comments at the full council meeting of Cheshire East on Thursday, October 21.

He told members that he had received '10 death threats' during his time as leader and that a 'dead carcass' had also been left in front of his home in Bunbury.

Cllr Jones’ comments came as he defended himself over concerns about the way contracts had been awarded to Core Fit Ltd, run by his physio.

Opposition Labour councillors told the meeting that Core Fit had been involved in a successful pilot scheme to provide fitness classes at primary schools and community centres across Cheshire east.

They said that in February a year-long contract was put out to tender, attracting a number of bidders.

However, it was awarded to Core Fit in March, before the tender process had ended.

Following Cllr Jones’ comments, Cllr Steve Hogben, Labour member for Crewe South, posted on Twitter: "I assume these were all reported to the police.

"I was shocked to hear him mention them at full council in public."

Cheshire Police confirmed to the Guardian that an animal carcass had been left on Cllr Jones drive but had no record of the death threats.

“We received one report of an animal carcass being left on his drive in August 2013," the spokesman said.

“We have not received any calls in relation to death threats.

"We have since spoken to Mr Jones to see if he requires any support, which he has declined.”
