AN Olympic gold medallist will be the guest of honour at a charity dinner in Nantwich.

Gold-winning javelin thrower Tessa Sanderson, will appear at the fundraiser at Nantwich Civic Hall on Friday, March 11.

Tessa, who is the first black woman to win Olympic gold for Team GB and compete in six separate ‘Olympic Games’, will discuss her career and take part in a Q&A session.

A spokesman for Nantwich Town Council said: “Upon retirement from the sport, she invested back into her community by opening a sports academy for youths and served on the Olympic legacy committee.

“She was a primary figure in developing the presence of the 2012 Olympic venue and preserving its legacy for England.

“Her work has been honoured multiple times, including some of the highest honours from her country for her athletic and philanthropic achievements.

“She has firmly cemented her legacy as a trailblazer for both black women and British women athletes with her achievements.”

Tessa set several javelin records during her career, besting the UK record multiple times.

She broke the 16-year losing streak for British women at the Commonwealth games and had two more winning appearances there throughout her athletic career.

She attended six Olympics with varying success. The highlight of her Olympic career was her gold medal win in Los Angeles.

Tessa also won first place at the ‘Athletic World Cup’ during her time competing.

The Olympian will be joined at the Civic Hall by hosts Cllr Andrew Martin, mayor of Nantwich, and Linda Martin, the Lady Mayoress.

Comedian Jed Stone will provide additional entertainment and memorabilia and prizes will also be up for grabs in a raffle on the night.

Tickets for this event are £35 each or a table of 10 for £320.

All proceeds from this event will go to the Mayor’s Charities – Nantwich In Bloom, Nantwich Food Bank, Nantwich Players and Nantwich Museum.
